    Huntington is a remarkable town in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Huntington is on the north shore of Long Island in the northwest portion of Suffolk County. Long Island Sound lies to the north and Nassau County adjoins on the west. Although an hour and fifteen minutes from New York City, Huntington is considered one of its bedroom communities.     Huntington was originally settled in 1653 and is closely tied to the early development of the American colonies. Later, the whaling industry, and increased manufacturing activity, grew the local economy. The community also expanded with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1867, until the population exploded at the end of WWII. Homes and resorts now took the place of what had once been farmland. The area became a summer retreat for those wanting a break from city life. Today, Huntington has five harbors bordering the north shore: Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, Huntington, Northport, and Centerport harbors. There’s a total of nine beaches maintained by the town and three marinas for resident’s use.
